I’ll try to figure out how to import this or otherwise keep it for the future, but it’s just not growing on me. I only got two votes from the blogreading public, both agree. See you back at

Snow Day (almost) January 18, 2007

Filed under: Kinder, Los Angeles — soliluna @ 9:10 pm

ok, so the snow fell in Malibu, not Los Feliz, but it was close! Close enough that our class marked a tally next to “snow” on our weather chart, just because we could! It warmed up today (finally) enough so that I actually went out for a jog this evening. after dark. by myself. Yes I know. But…I haven’t exercised (i.e. raised my heart rate/sweat a drop) in MONTHS, and I was IN THE MOOD> Plus, I took my cell phone. Plus I told my husband my planned route, just in case. PLus, I wore light colors and pants with a white stripe down the side. I felt GREAT upon my return, and immediately searched upcoming local 5K races because, after all, I ran one in 2001, so why not 6 years later, IN THE SAME SHOES> (!) NOnetheless, I could hear my Grandma’s voice in the very back of my mind, admonishing me NOT TO DO IT> well, next time, I’ll take a friend. Here is what I saw during the run:

*The newly reopened Griffith Observatory all lit up like a feudal castle watching over the neighborhood
*Stars (in the SKY) it was that clear!
*city lights from the top of Kenmore Blvd.

Happy Friday everyone…it’s “P” week in our class so we’re having popcorn tomorrow…my first food related lesson this year (except for the dried fruit and the friendship fruit salad)

Holly-wood January 14, 2007

img_3240.jpgimg_3245.jpgHollyimg_3250.jpgimg_3251.jpgI am very happy (and relieved) to report that there is indeed Holly growing in Hollywood. Yesterday, we chose to forego a trip to the snowy peaks of Big Bear for a day of in-town hiking. After all, we’ve lived in LA nearly 600 days and we hadn’t made it to the legendary Hollywood sign. We donned our matching LL Bean hiking shoes (provided this year by santa mama), stocked our pack with vitamin waters and energy bars, and headed off. Despite the forecaster’s call for cold weather, the sun warmed things up and the air was fresh and cool, not biting. We parked at the top of Beachwood Canyon Dr. and headed up to the Holly Ridge trail on foot. We passed Sunset Ranch, where half a dozen tourists were saddling up for a trail ride, and started off on our adventure. The trail was wide and fairly easy to negotiate, basically a fire road. On our way up four or five cars used it to access the gated cell phone tower near the top. The views of LA were great. You could see the ocean. As we neared the crest of the ridge, parts of the San Fernando Valley appeared. We watched a few planes land in Burbank, saw the Glendale skyline with snow-crested peaks above, and watched a funeral procession enter the Forest Lawn cemetery. Further up, on the South Side, we caught never before seen glimpses of Lake Hollywood, the Hollywood Reservoir, and great views of the downtown skyline. Several people hiked with their dogs. We saw a gorgeous Great Dane and also the tiniest chihuahua. We actually felt sorry for the little guy, as his owners were leading him up this horse trail. We feared if he stepped in a road apple he might never be seen again. Seriously. I am not talking chihuahua. I am talking double miniature chihuahua. We both did double takes. Wish we got a pic. Anyway, here are some shots of the hike. happy sunday-

The Roof January 12, 2007

Filed under: Kinder — soliluna @ 6:41 pm

This afternoon 60 kindergartners, 3 teachers, 1 volunteer and 1 parent/baby combo climbed four stories to the roof of our school to see the snow on the distant mountains and the skyscrapers in downtown LA> It was quite an adventure! The weather was sunny and chilly, the kids were excited, and the onsite “field trip” did not disappoint. Standing at the bottom of the stairs near our classrooms, a few students looked nervously upward. Others were ready for anything! Soon, our winding line began to climb. Our class was at the end of the line, so we could see the first teacher up above. At the top, there are 360 degree views. To the north (on clear days) you can see the Hollywood sign and Griffith Observatory, to the west lines of palms and highways. The downtown skyline is visible at one end and to the northeast a snowy mountain range gives a hint of winter. A great way to end the week!

Saltenas January 7, 2007

Filed under: Bolivia, food — soliluna @ 7:08 pm

Woke up Saturday with a hankering for a saltena. Friday I had gone in search of empanadas that would be anywhere close to those at Ft. Lauderdale’s Argie Grill. I ended up in Monrovia and though I parked by happenstance just down the block from the right place, I was less than thrilled with the results. I even brought home a so-called “Tango” which has highly touted by the waitress as a spicy beefy treat but all D. could find inside were some limp mashed potatoes.Back to the salten~a. “What is it?” asked D. “Well, it’s similar to an empanada, but the dough is sweet and savory and it’s filled with stew. Usually chicken or beef with hard boiled egg chunks, potatoes, peas, raisins and broth. It is SO good. Do you think that since we live in one of the biggest cities in the country our odds are good on finding one? Today?” We found two places, but the first one La Kantuta in North Hollywood, was so good, we just stayed there. No need to go any further. We ate five between us. So good! img_3235.jpgimg_3236.jpgsoliluna.files.wordpress.com/2007/01/img_3234.jpg’ alt=’img_3234.jpg’ />img_3234.jpg

Highlander Creme January 6, 2007

Filed under: coffee — soliluna @ 11:42 am

img_3233.jpgI am not sure if it’s the whole smell association phenomenon, or simply good coffee, but I am in heaven right now. For sure, I’ve been spoiled all week with the Costa Rican coffee I brought back from the trip, (and all month with my favorite Dunkin Donuts* beans -imported by K! (*there are no DD’s in SoCal!) but yesterday we got a holiday surprise from J and Co.! Among the wonderful surprises (thanks J & Co.) was a package of decaf highlander creme from Presto George, the preferred coffee provider in Pittsburgh (at least for my family!) It’s located on The Strip, a fun warehouse district with early morning produce and oh so many ethnic markets and fun spots. It’s where you’ll find the fishmongers, butchers, and wholesale florists. It’s also where you’ll find trendy hotspots and fun lunch places (and J’s ultra-cool warehouse office!) But back to the coffee, one sip and I was sitting in J’s living room. So many memories came flooding back. Something else I noticed about it was the fine grind. Have to look into that. In the meantime, back to my cup of joy.
